The bay anchovy is the most abundant schooling fish in the Chesapeake Bay
Although bay anchovies have no recreational or commercial value, they fulfill a crucial role in the Chesapeake Bay food web — they are an important food source for top predators such as striped bass and bluefish, and are major consumers of plankton.
